To the woodpecker I caught in the act of pecking on a wall of the house this afternoon: Don't. Just stop now. You're lucky a) I couldn't find a stone in the moment and b) I throw very much like a girl.
Sometimes you can scare woodpeckers away by hanging mylar streamers from your roof line, or pie tins (the aluminum kind), or put one of those artificial owls out there. Or the balloons with the big eyes. The most expensive solution is to re-side your house in vinyl. Rather drastic just to ward off one woodpecker, probably.
