Jane Eyre is more of a masterpiece than most anyone realizes. Though I ADORE North and South. Well I think I adore the BBC series. Well I think I adore Richard Armitage....I digress....Read the opening of N&S, then of Jane Eyre. Just read the PUNCH of her prose. Terse forceful pared down to something powerful and unashamed. It was a revolution. Most people still don't notice. I think Middlemarch is probably the best novel written in Eglish (lots of sub categories there), but perhaps not as loveable (much funnier) and of course impossible not to dissolve into mucus streaming mush while reading the last page. I read Jane Eyre the first time when I was in 5th grade, sitting on the roof of a New England seaside cottage. I couldn't move. I ended up burnt and peeling, covered in the bites of mutant DTT proof green head flies. It was worth it.
